The upgrade of an item allows players to boost the gear rating of an item up to 700 points and add a bonus. Items can be upgraded if they're in your inventory and you take them to the kiln.

Certain items can be upgraded to benefit from their unique stats (like a perfectly made breakpoint armour that can be rolled to use in melee PvP) and others, like weapons, do not vary greatly post upgrade, and therefore aren't worth upgrading.

Weapons

Weapons can be upgraded to increase their numeric stats, such as the chance to crit, attack damage, PvE and PvP damage. Weapons come with a flat rate bonus that increases damage per second. Additionally there are many weapons with a set bonus that activates when three or more of the same weapon are equipped on a single unit. This bonus can sometimes be greater than the damage that an upgrade alone can cause.

The cost of upgrading a weapon is contingent on its rarity and level. For example, a +2 weapon will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while an upgrade of +3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade a weapon will continue increase until it requires a higher tier of Smithing Stones, at which the amount will be reset to one.

The upgrade of weapons can also change their base stats. This is usually a positive factor, but it could also have negative effects. Upgrades can make items impossible to use, unless you are exceptionally lucky.

Armor items can be upgraded to boost their stats. This will increase the base defense of a chest or helm as well as belts and gloves. These will boost their required strength and agility. Armor also offers a reroll option for its Enhanced Defense percentage, which means that it can sometimes roll back to a lower number.
