Item upgrading allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear with new affixes, increasing the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items an item, a player has to have it in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Items that have weak bases, like rings can be upgraded to more robust bases. Items with bases that are strong, such as eth Titans have little changes in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into trinkets, weapons, armor and gathering tools, giving an attribute bonus or extra impact when the equipment is being used. They can be purchased from vendors, gathered in loot, dropped by enemies or received as rewards from missions or chests. Certain upgrades can also be equipped with special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require the equipment to be above a certain point before they are upgraded.

To upgrade an armor, weapon or other item in the game, players will have to select it and click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will show a preview on the right side of the screen showing what the expected upgrade statistics will be, as well as the component or material needed to complete the upgrade.

There are three types of upgrade components: universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, like gems, can be put on any type of equipment. Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system is different from previous versions in several fundamental ways. Gear is now categorized in tracks, and each item can only be upgraded as many times before it is "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level however the materials required don't increase as much.
