Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses such as crit chance and PvE damage.

For instance an item with the upgrade template that is ending in % will take on an attack damage of 3% each time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item upgrades's level. The cost increases as the level of the item increases.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into armor, weapons, and trinkets to give an extra stat boost or effect while they're in use. They can be obtained through crafting, purchasing from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be placed in equipment that has a slot for them; the item must have been at the very least upgraded to blue level to allow a component to be applied. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied only once. They are not able to be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and enrichments are a specific kind of upgrade component that is used for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment, as well as some of the back items that are not ascending. Infusions and enrichments can be recovered by salvaging gear from the ascended, or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

They can be dropped by enemies when upgrading other gear, or by buying them from the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals each.

Each upgrade increases the probability that a higher-tier version of the item will be dropped at the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to keep upgrading their gear even if they're uncertain of how much they'll increase after a future reset.

The process of upgrading an item upgrades can be expensive and it is likely that the item will eventually become obsolete or even break if the upgrade is unsuccessful. Upgrade Crystals and assist powder are also destroyed when an upgrade fails. Cash shop items can be used to minimize or eliminate the risk of failure. Certain upgrades also provide a bonus if they are reinserted.

Glyphs

Glyphs can be used to upgrade the Paragon Board by placing them in special sockets. Glyphs boost the power of nodes within a radius, which includes any pre-existing attaches. Glyphs are upgraded in many ways. We recommend upgrading them as fast as you can to level 15.

Every upgradeable item is assigned an amount that determines the final stats. Upgraded items can be leveled up to a maximum level of ilvl 385. Each level of an item requires different components, and upgrade costs increase with each level.

Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained from the completion of Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or on the upgrade tab of the crafting table. Each Upgrade Recipe completed yields a certain number of Technology points. These points can be used to upgrading an item. Once enough points are earned you'll be eligible to claim the upgrade and get its extra bonuses.

When the player upgrades an item it is replaced with a different item of the same kind. The same armor will receive an weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will have its own set bonus. This could be a disadvantage since the item may be more expensive even if you do not require it.

The upgrades to items can be rerolled if the player has enough tokens to do this. This will cause the item to be exchanged for a new one, which will come with the level 1 base, and a totally different set of bonuses. This is a good idea however it should not be used frequently as it can waste resources.

Some upgrades can be rerolled many times which increases their value and giving players the ability to alter their equipment. The probability of failure increases as you go over the maximum number. Failures can result in the item reverting to its initial state which means that the player has to spend additional items than if they stopped upgrading after the maximum number.

If an item is not upgraded the experience bar in its growth bar will be reset to zero. Additionally the item will lose any bonuses it gained such as crit chance and attack damage, as well as all additional effects associated with the effect (for instance, an increase in heal over time or the speed of reloading). However, the player can continue to use the weapon or armor following the failure.

When an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from the lowest to the highest.
