Upgrades will give you a boost to specific stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. Each upgrade also boosts the random substatus.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless the item level upgrade has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like eth Titan weapons). The latter see less value from upgrading due to the necessity to roll for a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade gear to a higher item Level Upgrade level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item upgrader mod will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to the enchantments.

You can upgrade your equipment at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear current it is recommended you visit the upgrader each couple of weeks.

The cost of upgrading will vary based on the current level of the gear being upgraded but they will always be less expensive than purchasing new gear from other sources. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest piece to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points purchasing a similar piece from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items which can be used to level up weapons and tools, armor and other accessories. They can be purchased from item upgraders NPCs for a variety of currencies. They are also available on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any weapon, tool, or armor. button, which displays an item's preview at the next upgrade items level in the event that the player has enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the slot of the item and current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for example. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Certain upgrades provide a discount on the Flightstones. After an item has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price.

Upgraders for items are available in many places including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and the possibility of getting the latest recipe. The upgrade discount increases depending on the amount of items being upgraded. It can also be boosted by having players complete some specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead, the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades are acquired via various methods which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system was tweaked a bit, with numerous new features added. Once the player has upgraded to a certain item level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same item level will cost less. This applies even if the items are from another set of gear.

Crests

They come in four ranks.

The first thing to remember is that crests can only be used to purchase equipment of a particular rank, and that each rank has its own requirements for upgrading. The most basic and straightforward upgrade process costs just 15 crests while the most complex can require as much as 20 crests based on the kind of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by finishing tasks at the appropriate level. This could be done by doing outdoor activities, or by taking on dungeons and raids of any difficulty to earn lower-tier gear or Mythicbosses of raids or dungeons with a heroic difficulty for gear in the endgame. Crests can be exchanged at an upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade paths and steps.

Using these new currencies isn't too complicated, but the system does introduce some changes to the overall upgrade process. For example, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest upgrade level of any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it will no longer require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is designed to allow players to upgrade their gear up to the highest level possible for all their characters rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests have one usage, so it's important to use them properly. For instance, it's a good idea utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the best gear you have available and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you're planning to make. This is particularly true for items such as trinkets and rings that take up multiple slots. The discount on the account will only be applicable if all slots on the character are filled with high-quality equipment.
